Direct mail advertising can be pretty expensive, so it’s best you know the ins and outs of it before you start.

My first of several direct marketing tips… It typically takes anywhere from three to five mail pieces before you get any kind of response, and sometimes it takes even more exposure. For an optimal response rate, it’s best that you use a highly targeted direct mail advertising list.

To acquire a nice, highly targeted direct mail list, rent one that has some commonalities, such as the same industry, occupation, people in certain age rages, demographics, etc…

Once you have that list, write a headline that can connect with the target audience, one that will hit their hot buttons. If you write up a pretty good headline, mailing out to a solid list, there’s not reason that you can’t do better than the standard one percent response. Perhaps boosting it up to 3 to 5 percent.

Another one of my favorite direct mail tips is this… in order to find out what your audience is most interested, just ask them. Why would you want to mail out your offer to an audience that does not want it. Of course, this option is not available to everyone and some expense will be incurred in testing this, however once you have refined this process, the response to your offer will be much greater… translating into greater profits.

On with more direct mail tips… next we have postcards. They are not used too often by larger businesses and when you do find one, save it. They know what they’re doing. It’s an excellent way to reach out to your customers and clients at a fraction of the cost. It’s cheaper to reproduce and mail out postcards, and it’s especially beneficial when you can post all your content on one side and have a nice picture. I love this because the prospect or client will be forced to read your message.

Moving on with the direct mail tips… you should set up a system to track and measure all mailings you send out. You want to test the headline, offer, price, envelope, day of the week you’re mailing, etc. Once you find a number that you’re happy with, you can continue until you see the numbers dwindle, or try to beat it by testing even more.

Next, you should be using a two step process. Get your audience to first let you know that they are interested, then it will be much easier to market to them, as opposed to marketing to a cold list.
Here’s one of the most powerful of all direct mail tips, when it comes to writing your sales offer… you’re going to want to use a deadline. It forces people to take action, instead of having them wait days, weeks or months, if ever to respond to your offer.

Start small, then work your way up. Test 500 to 1000 pieces first, adjust and track your numbers.
The bottom line here, direct response advertising can be an effective tool, you must know how to use it. Maximize your return by testing and comparing your data, always trying to reach for the highest response. Years ago I had “tried” starting a home based business, but I did not stick with it. In hindsight, I did not know what to look for, or how to get it up and running quickly so that I could make money at it; I had to learn too much stuff and could not just focus on making money.

I am going to share with you my insights into picking, starting and succeeding in a Network Marketing Home Based Business. If you understand what to look for and how to measure a business opportunity properly, then when you come across what you are looking for, it will be very clear.

The first thing is to assess yourself; make sure you have an “Entrepreneurs Spirit” because starting a business is certainly not for everyone. Business involves risk and a true Entrepreneur will consider the risk and then play full out with the “expectation to win”. People that do not have the “Entrepreneurs Spirit” will play “not to lose”.

The next thing to know is that business systems work; systems never fail people, people fail systems.

To start a successful Network Marketing Home Based Business, find something that you genuinely like. The product, the marketing system, the amount of money you will make when product sells, etc. All this has to be of genuine interest to you, if not, find a business that you can really get your heart into. Otherwise what is the point of doing it?

Money?

Well believe it or not, if you do not like what you are going to do before you set out to do it, you can expect failure down the road; big money will only come if you like what you do in this world.

Next, be willing to make the time available to build your business.

If you are currently working between 40-80 hours per week now, (who works just 40 any more) are you willing to find the time, or make the time to commit to your business, to get things off the ground?

You may need to put in about 8-10 hours per week and while some of this could be done on the weekends, you will need time during the week too. Quick question, how many hours a day/night to you watch TV? I bet you could find your time if you shut off that electronic income reducer; stop watching other people live their lives. If you do not make the time, well, you will fail at your business and at life; you will not get something for nothing. Also, the definition of insanity (or failure) is doing the same thing expecting a different result.

In my opinion, you should want to target attaining a lifestyle instead of just creating another job, so shoot for a maximum of 20 - 25 hours per week, making sure that effort will result in more than at least twice what you are making now, then build on your leverage to continue increasing you income after that.

How will you know? Well legal and legitimate Network Marketing Home Based Business companies publish the earnings of the associates in their business, so get that info. But if that info is not readily available, then run away. A good company will have around 20% of their associates making more than twice the national average income.

Do you honestly think (if you have been told) that you can get started in this industry or any business and become a millionaire overnight? If so, you really need to keep reading.

Expect about a 3-6 month window to get your business off the ground and making money.

Consider your time commitment before you get started and when asking yourself the questions; “how badly do I want this”, put a picture of your boss in front of you, then imagine seeing that face until you retire at 85 (85 is the new 65 by the way), then come up with your answer.

Referral Marketing.

With every contact, if they’re interested, ask for referrals. If they are not interested, ask for referrals. Ask for referrals from family and friends, family, enemies, and neighbors.

First of all business takes a combination of perspiration and inspiration. Do you really think that if someone had a business that took little effort and investment – they would let thousands of people have this information. Facts and Figures. Some sales materials will contain what you are lead to believe are real examples of income earned through the particular program they are trying to peddle. But, with image editing programs such as Adobe Photoshop, anyone can “doctor” up an image that reflects so called “real earnings”. Again, some are real, and others are made up to get you hooked enough to close the sale. Notice that any sales page that contains “actual” facts or earning income figures will also carry disclaimers that “the results represented here are not typical”, or some other type of legal material to keep the seller out of “hot water” with people who expect the “moon”.

So how do you protect yourself?

* Take a beat – think it over before rush to invest in that new product/idea/course.

* Remember that most of these types of companies make their money from selling the product/idea/course to people like you as opposed to using the concepts in their own business.

* Use your favorite search engine to do a search on your chosen business product/idea/course. See what other people have said about it and see how many other people are selling the product as well.

< B>You have to get into a warm market.

Now, many people think you need to run over to Uncle Ben’s place and ask to borrow some rice and while you are there, pop the question. “So Uncle Ben, want to make a 6 figure income? I know how…!” - More than likely, Uncle Ben will do one of two things. Pop ya in the nose or laugh and ask, “how are you doing or how much have you made so far?” Wouldn’t you agree? (Tom Hopkins - Yes I’ve been there and done that too.) To which, most newbies reply, “well…nothing yet, but I’m gunna make a killing, wait till I bring over some stuff for you to look at!” STOP - HOLD THE PHONES KIDS! Don’t do that. Tell him to buy you lunch and you will meet him at the local McDonalds in 60 min with a duffle bag full of Tile Cleaning Products. Pause…. and look at the look on his face. When he hunches over and is about to barf, run like the wind Forest.

HONESTLY! - hehe Don’t go tell anyone you know RIGHT AWAY! Simply DON’T! There are a few things to consider before doing this….

Weigh these questions…

Do you have credibility?
Do you know your compensation plan inside and out?
Do you know your product inside and out?

If you answered no, maybe or not sure to any of these, then you are lacking enough merit to talk to your immediate family and close friends right out of the gate. They will not be serious. They don’t want to see someone they know, (who isn’t a big success already) succeed big, and most likely will be the most negative, time wasters. Spinning your wheels and getting no where the first few days out of the gate is not a good investment into your mental and financial pocketbook. ONLY talk to close friends and relatives, right out of the gate, if you have serious credibility and they already listen and take things you say very serious. This usually means that you need to have a track record with good success with regards to money earning and/or business sense potential.

If you lack credibility in any sense of the word, it is best to hold off on close contacts. You need to generate income ASAP to build momentum. Your warm market really is anyone with a pulse that ISN’T related to you. Your HOT market is people looking for what you have to offer them. Those are the contacts that have their money out waiting for what you have to offer them. Find this market and you have yourself a winning hand.

You ask, “How do I market to my warm market if I can’t go talk to family and friends right away?” Many trainers try to get new members/distributors to try and talk to this crowd right away…I think like this…If you make money in your business, all you need to do with those people is show them a pay stub and it speaks in volumes. You don’t have to spin your wheels. Most of them will instantly think you have credibility and know your stuff and will follow suit. It’s amazing what money can say for you. That market isn’t going anywhere. They most likely will not get you to the top right out of the gate though if you lack any kind of credibility.

You must get into the right market and find out their most desirable desires, burning questions, scariest fears and goofiest problems.

You do that, and find out what they are, then you are almost half way to a marketing boom. We will talk about how to do that in another article.

Create some kind of online/newspaper/ad presence that addresses those questions and/or feelings in your prospects.

Focus on how to get them feeling. You want them to tie emotions with your offer. People buy or make money decisions based on emotion, not logic most of the time. When was the last time you were feeling bad and decided to go buy a bunch of junk food or fast food to make you feel better? Now you know why Americans are getting so over weight. People buy based on emotion. They buy things that make them or perceive to make them feel better.

Take a brief look at fast food. Its been proven in several studies, that the food actually does have an emotional and physiological effect on how you feel when you eat it. It’s like a high almost. You get a rush of adrenaline when you eat fast food. Its loaded with cards, sugar, fat and things that tell the brain you are being taken care of psychologically. It’s a real interesting study. Now you know why Ronald McDonald has red hair.

So if you create a presence that pushes the same kind of buttons, people have no choice but to gravitate to what it is you are trying to say.

Practice trying to push some of these buttons on people, and see how they respond…its fun….

Coerce them to your web page as soon as you can.

This is one of the hardest aspects of your business marketing. Getting prospects to your web page is also one of the most important aspects of your business and is ether going to make or break your momentum.

There are a number of ways to get hits on your web page. We will discuss this in another article.

You need to get the people that go to your web page, to take action.

You need to incorporate number 2 into this equation. Add feeling triggers when relating a message on your page. You have to make it short and to the point. Most visitors to a page decide with-in 8-10 sec if they are going to stay and look longer. If you don’t capture their attention with-in 8 to 10 seconds, chances are they are going to leave. The more visitors to a site and the more repeating visitors, the more busy a front/index/splash/landing page can be, and maintain their interest. I suggest one page that is short, sweet, easy to read, and pushes feeling buttons.

The most important thing you must achieve on your main web page, where you drive your traffic, is to GET THEM TO TAKE ACTION! Bribe them to fill out your form, click your link, reply to your offer, etc. You need to offer them something they can’t refuse. A bribe that would make them appear totally crazy NOT to take action. If they don’t take action based on your offer, then you automatically screened the people out that are so skeptical, scared and unsure of things, that they now wont be wasting your time down the road.

Offer them a free newsletter, consultation, more information etc. It really does work well. There are numerous places on the net where you can get info on how to create these items.

Make sure you follow up with them.

Having a good system for follow up is very important. The use of auto email responders works well along with the old phone call follow up technique. You can set your email responders to send out emails every few days. Auto responders are good ways to provide follow ups with out having to actually remember all the emails that need to be made. Have a template of several emails that can be sent out on various days. Make sure you have an “opt out link” on the emails, so those individuals that get them, can “opt out” of the email campaign.

The first P in relation to MLM Marketing means “Prospects”, internet marketing generates leads that may ultimately turn into one time sales but with MLM Marketing we are looking for prospects we can share our opportunity with. Our first goal in MLM Marketing is to generate as many prospects as we can.

The second P in relation to MLM Marketing means “Profits”. When marketing an MLM like with internet marketing there are free methods and methods that will cost money. With internet marketing however you have the ability of generating immediate sales to replenish your advertising budget when you spend money on promoting your products. With MLM Marketing you will generally NOT get a return on investment UNLESS you utilize what is called a “funded Proposal”. This is a method of marketing a tool, resource, report or ebook that puts a little cash in your pocket when people purchase it while simultaneously creating a proven list of targeted buyers you can promote your MLM Opportunity to. Without generating profits when you promote your MLM you will ultimately deplete your resources and have to resort solely to free promotional resources.

The third and final P in relation to MLM Marketing stands for “Personal Sign Ups”. Your ultimate goal when doing any MLM Marketing is to get sign ups in your MLM Opportunity. MLM Marketing does NOT end after you generate a prospect. It includes the act of following up with your prospects, presenting your opportunity to the prospects and ultimately convincing those prospects to not only join your MLM but to join with YOU as opposed to someone else in the same company. MLM Marketing is a lot more intricate than basic internet marketing although many of the principles of internet marketing can be used to assist you IF you understand the three P’s of MLM Marketing. If you are diligent in implementing the 3 P’s you will have the foundation towards achieving success no matter what MLM you are promoting.
